With almost everyone looking to the internet for their holiday shopping this year, there will be cyber criminals looking to take advantage of the opportunity as well. It may seem scary for some of you. However, there are ways to protect your information and mitigate risks this shopping season.
Start by updating your browser. Keeping your browser up to date is imperative to internet security. While updating each browser is different, below are links to instructions for the top internet browsers:
Look for HTTPS. If you submit credit card information or personal details, ensure that the URL begins with HTTPS, not just HTTP. HTTPS means that the URL encrypts your data to protect it from hackers.
Be wary of emails. You are probably receiving dozens of emails every day with amazing deals. The risk here is phishing attempts. Do not click on links or downloading files from any unknown sources. Even better, go straight to the business’ website rather than clicking on any links or emails from unknown senders.
Use strong passwords and do not utilize the same password across multiple accounts, especially ones that house personal information. Update your passwords regularly and log out of your accounts when you are finished.
Pay with a credit card and monitor your transactions regularly. Checking your activity gives you a better chance of catching a fraudulent attempt early and gives you the option to dispute with your credit card company.
Use a VPN, or virtual private network, when connected to an unsecured network both on a computer and mobile device. Learn more about VPNs here.
These tips should help to protect you online this season but, when in doubt, do not click and take your time. Good luck and happy shopping!
